At a Glance: 2024 Mazda CX-50 GT

The 2024 Mazda CX-50 is great for those that have an outdoorsy lifestyle and want a mix of luxury while still at an affordable price. This is not to be confused with the CX-5 although they are similar in size, the CX-5 is more of a city driver whereas the CX-50 has a bit more off-road capability. For the 2024 model, there weren’t any big updates, other than a tuned steering for better off-road ability.

Engine/Transmission

The CX-50 GT Turbo, which is the trim level I got to drive, has a 2.5L turbo engine paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission. It is standard with all-wheel drive and produces 227hp and 310lb-ft of torque with regular gasoline. The numbers change slightly higher if you use premium fuel. All other trim levels are standard with a 2.5L naturally aspirated engine producing 187hp and 186lb-ft of torque. If you ask me, the turbo engine is the one to go for as it is more enjoyable to drive as it has better acceleration, so it does not feel like it struggles to keep up to speed. When it comes to fuel economy of course its not going to be as great as a N/A engine as more power means more fuel. It is rated at 10.4L/100km in a city and 8.2L/100km in a hwy and a combined 9.4L/100km. I averaged a combined 10.2L/100km during my time with the CX-50.

Handling/Performance

Driving around winding roads in the CX-50 is enjoyable, it has responsive and sharp handling around corners and is decent for a compact SUV. Body roll is minimal on winding roads, so you don’t feel like you’re going to end up in a ditch. While cruising on city streets, it is quite comfortable, nothing too special, drives like any other model with a turbo engine. Overtaking a vehicle will not be an issue as it accelerates quick for a compact SUV. It is said to reach 100km/h (62mph) in about 7 seconds, so while this does not sound fast, it feels a bit quicker and again great for a small SUV. When compared to its competitors other than Subaru, I feel the CX-50 is the most engaging to drive. Comparing to the Toyota Rav4 for example, even if you were to opt for the non-turbo CX-50, I still feel it drives better than the others.

Comfort

Unfortunately, it isn’t as spacious as its competitors like the CR-V for example. If a spacious compact SUV is what you’re looking for, then I would look elsewhere. At 5ft 10, I had no issues with leg space or head room in the driver’s seat but a passenger taller than me might not be able to sit as comfortably in the rear seats. This isn’t to say they will be squished but then again it is a small SUV after all.  Legroom in the rear seats is 39.8 inches whereas in the CR-V it is 41 inches. Though it may not seem like a lot, those almost 2 inches make a difference. Other than spacing, the seats are comfortable with good padding and good support for your back and sides. Road noise is minimal as well and engine noise you will hear if you accelerate quickly.

Interior

The CX-50 is equipped with a 10.5-inch display that is only touchscreen when connected to Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. Now this might be odd to some, but I think it works perfect. At least we now get a touchscreen, but I do hope the buttons/knobs stay for the climate control. It’s a perfect balance between the two. It has wireless phone charging, dual climate zone, front and rear seat USB ports, power adjustable seats for both the driver and passenger which are terracotta leather trimmed upholstery seats. The interior of the 2024 Mazda CX-50 or any new model does not disappoint. It feels a bit on the premium side while not costing as much. I like that it still has a mix of buttons/knobs for the important controls and overall, just looks great.

Exterior

It is equipped with 20-inch alloy wheels, has LED exterior lighting, and one cool feature I like are the exterior mirrors linked with the memory seat function. It looks great and has that outdoorsy look if that’s even a thing. I think the wide fender’s is what gives it that tough look which again goes to my previous saying of looking outdoorsy.

Pros/Cons

I think that the best trim would be the one with the turbo engine as it is more enjoyable to drive. The 2024 Mazda CX-50 is great for those wanting a decent and affordable off-road compact SUV. Although it is the smallest of its competitors, it sure makes up for it with the great materials used throughout the cabin and its engine. However, if you’re just looking to buy a compact SUV and not really someone that wants an off-road SUV, then the CR-V would be a better option as that one is a bit more spacious and more of a family compact SUV in my opinion. The starting price of the CX-50 is $39,300 CAD ($32,705USD).
