The 2024 CX-90 PHEV wasn’t really what I was expecting it in terms of driving dynamics. Although it is spacious and comfortable, it did not feel as ‘sporty’ as other Mazda models.
Engine/Transmission
As we know this is the first plug-in hybrid from Mazda. It has a 2.5L 4-cylinder engine and an electric motor producing up to 323 hp & 369 lb-ft of torque. This of course depends on what type of fuel you use. Regular fuel provides a bit less power than premium fuel. The electric motor & battery can provide up to 42 km of all-electric range. So if you have a lot of short errands in your day to day life, this is enough most needs. The engine is paired with a new 8-speed automatic transmission.
Handling/Performance
As I mentioned earlier, I did not find the CX-90 to drive as athletic as the rest of Mazda’s lineup. I didn’t feel as secure when driving on a windy road as it felt like it was going to roll over if going too quick. On city streets it has more than enough power so no issues there. It shifts gears smoothly if left to do it on its own. Highway driving was also decent as road noise isn’t much and it picks up speed quickly to be able to overtake another vehicle. The CX-90 is rated for 10.3 L/100km in a city and 8.5 L/100km in a hwy while I averaged 8.8 L/100km with mostly highway driving on just gasoline.
Comfort
Sitting in the CX-90 for long periods of time is not an issue as it is spacious. The CX-90 is the largest SUV Mazda has offered with a 3rd row seat. Even taller than average individuals will not have an issue in the front and 2nd row seats but not as comfortable in the 3rd row as that space is limited most of the time.
Interior
I can’t complain about the interior of Mazda’s in most recent models, I think they have done a great job at providing nice materials to the touch, and just providing some feel of luxury. This CX-90 is no different. It is great looking on the inside with its Nappa leather seats, and just a great feel inside overall.
Exterior
The exterior will not give you a “wow” effect in my opinion. It’s a big SUV which is quite round looking from behind but not something I like in a vehicle at least. It is equipped with 21-inch wheels, so they are big which looks good on the SUV. Overall, not a bad looking SUV, it just does not stand out from the rest of the competitor SUVs.
Pros/Cons
If you are someone that needs the big space but doesn’t want to spend so much on fuel, then the 2024 Mazda CX-90 PHEV is a great option. It has enough electricity range for quick errands and its not so bad for fuel economy compared to a full-on gasoline version. It looks great on the inside and outside but if you’re like me, I care more for the inside than the outside. The price of this 2024 Mazda CX-90 PHEV GT is $64,350 CAD. Now I know this may throw you off a bit but keep in mind it is a plug-in hybrid which are still on the expensive side.
