News: The Nissan 400Z Is Coming

The Nissan 370Z has been around since the time of the dinosaurs. Nissan has tried to inject new life into the car with special editions like the Nismo 370Z but at the core, it was still a decades old design. Now there have been rumors (and even test mules spied) of the next generation Z-car circulating around the net. Here’s what’s known so far.

The current Nissan 370Z is powered by a 3.7L naturally aspirated V6 engine that produces 332 hp or 350 hp in the Nismo variant. The next generation Z could be powered by a 3.0L twin-turbocharged V6 engine; the same one that’s found in the current Infiniti Q60 Red Sport 400. In the Q60, the engine produces 400 hp and 350 lb-ft of torque which could lead to the new Z taking the “400Z” nameplate to show progression over the current Z-car.

While this twin-turbocharged engine is mated to a 7-speed automatic in the Q60, the Nissan Z has always had a manual transmission option. Nissan created a one-off concept for the SEMA show in which they stuffed this 400 hp V6 engine into the body of the current 370Z and with a 6-speed manual transmission. So the possibility is there for Nissan to have a manual transmission in the new Z to keep enthusiasts happy.

With stiff competition from the new Toyota Supra and old faithfuls like the Ford Mustang and Chevrolet Camaro, the Nissan 400Z will have to remain relatively well priced. The current 370Z is a bargain at just $30,498 CAD ($30, 090 USD) to start. This is why the current 370Z is still relevant in today’s market as it undercuts the competition by a substantial amount of money for the performance that you’re getting. The new 400Z probably won’t have that low of a starting MSRP but if it will come with 400 hp, hopefully it’ll start at under $40,000 CAD… or less.
