News: 2021 Toyota Supra To Get 2.0L Base Engine

Only a year after it was introduced, the Supra is already receiving major revisions. The 2021 Toyota Supra will be getting a new 2.0L 4-cylinder turbocharged engine as well as a boost in power for the 3.0L 6-cylinder turbocharged engine.

Starting with the new 2.0L engine, it will of course be a BMW sourced engine just like most of the car. It will produce 255 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque just like in the new BMW 330i sedan. Power will be sent to the rear wheels via an 8-speed automatic and unfortunately it doesn’t look like a manual transmission will be available. This entry level Supra will weigh 200 lbs less than the 6-cylinder version but will still have the 50:50 weight distribution. It will also come with fewer options than the 3.0L Supra some of which include single piston front calipers, no active rear differential, a four speaker sound system, and manually adjustable seats to name a few. Pricing for the 2.0L Toyota Supra has not been announced but Toyota says it will slot between the GT86 and the 3.0L Supra.

Speaking of the 3.0L Toyota Supra, the 2021 model year will receive the BMW Z4’s power output of 382 hp and 368 lb-ft of torque. Currently the Toyota Supra produces 335 hp and 365 lb-ft of torque. The increase in power will result in a 0-60 mph (96 km/h) sprint in 3.9 seconds; down from 4.1 seconds. Top speed is still limited to 155 mph (250 km/h).

The 2021 3.0L Toyota Supra will also benefit from new aluminum braces from the radiator to the strut towers, front and rear bump stops, an updated tune to the dampers, and revised programming to the adaptive suspension, electronic steering, and active rear differential.

All 2021 Supra’s will benefit from standard equipment such as an 8.8″ touchscreen, Apple CarPlay and forward collision alert with automatic emergency braking. However this being more of a BMW product, the options list will be extensive with features such as a 12 speaker JBL audio system, wireless CarPlay, rear cross traffic alert, adaptive cruise control, and navigation will be available at a cost.

Expect to see the 2021 Toyota Supra in dealerships by Summer or Fall of 2020.
