Review: 2022 Ford Mustang GT Convertible

The 2022 Ford Mustang GT is a car that will put a smile to most people’s faces regardless of their age. A Mustang can also be personalized to meet individuals wants and needs. You can have the option of a convertible or coupe, manual transmission or automatic, a 2.3L EcoBoost, a 5.0L V8, and even a supercharged 5.2L.

Engine & Transmission

I was able to drive the 5.0L V8 Mustang GT with the 6-speed manual transmission. This car comes with a naturally aspirated V8 engine, and it produces 450hp and 410lb-ft of torque (335 kW / 556 Nm). Like previous years, the Mustang’s optional active valve exhaust has four settings: Quiet, Normal, Sport, and Track. Quiet, is still louder than any other car but quiet enough to not disturb your neighbours. Normal, is loud enough to wake an entire block. Although this 2022 Mustang GT has less horsepower due to regulatory emissions requirements, it is not to say that it is any less fun than previous years. 0-100km/h, or 62mph, is done in about 4 seconds. The Mustang can be equipped with a 2.3L EcoBoost 4 cylinder being the smallest engine, the 5.0L V8, and the supercharged 5.2L V8 Shelby GT being the top trim. As mentioned before, this demo vehicle has the standard 6-speed manual transmission while a 10-speed automatic is available.

Handling/Performance

The Mustang GT is a RWD car. It feels planted when driving on winding roads which is what you would expect from a sports car. The Mustang GT is equipped with Brembo brakes that provide good stopping power. Whether you decide to purchase a manual or automatic, both are engaging. I prefer a manual in the Mustang as I do love the exhaust sound when downshifting. Another great thing about the manual is that it comes standard with a rev match feature. This feature helps with smoother downshifts. Regardless of which driving mode you are in; the GT will provide an engaging drive that will not disappoint.

Comfort

The Ford Mustang GT is a 4-seater but realistically speaking, it is a 2-seater. The back seats are basically non-existent. They are there to fill up space. I can maybe see a child sitting in the back if the front seats are pushed forward but that would mean a driver’s height being less than 5’5″. During my time with the Mustang, I found it to be comfortable. I could drive for a long time and would not get tired and that says a lot coming from a person who cannot sit for too long without getting back aches. The great thing about the 2022 Mustang is that it can be a daily commuter and a car to have some fun with! It offers a great amount of power should you ask for it.

Interior

As for the interior, to some it may feel outdated. Most manufacturers nowadays are opting for touch screens so for those that prefer buttons or toggles, its perfect. The 8-inch infotainment screen is very simple to use, and you will get the hang of it quick. One cool thing about the Mustang is the ambient lighting. This makes it less boring on the inside as you can change the colors as you wish.  At the end of the day muscle cars are known for their engine and how monstrous they look and not so much for how pretty it is. The soft top is power operated and takes less than a couple seconds to open or close. The Mustang as we know has large doors that can be a bit heavy to some. The key is not to open it all the way so that you don’t have trouble pulling it to close.

Exterior

This is a car that looks much better with the top down in my opinion. The exterior has not disappointed throughout the years. It is equipped with 19-inch wheels, dual exhaust outlets with quad tips, front gloss black grille and LED lights. The grille is what makes the car look great as in any other car.

Pros and Cons

As we know, with V8s its impossible to save money on fuel. The 2022 Ford Mustang GT takes premium fuel and with gas prices these days, you won’t be saving much at the pumps. During my time with the Mustang, I averaged 13.4L/100km with mostly highway driving. Now I know I could have averaged a bit less but its impossible not to get a bit excited and drive enthusiastically with a Mustang GT. Visibility was not an issue for me at all with the top up. The large windows made it easy for me to shoulder check with no issues. I can see it being an issue depending on how low your seat is or how far back you adjust the seat when driving. Rearward visibility is less with the top up but also isn’t a big issue as the Mustang is equipped with backup cameras. The trunk has enough space for your belongings, it has enough space to go grocery shopping, or go on a road trip etc. If you are looking for a fun car to drive around with more than 1 passenger, then this isn’t it. As I mentioned previously, there is no space in the backseats.

Overall, the Mustang GT is a great car. Whether you decide to purchase the 4-cylinder turbo or the 5.0L V8, you will still have a lot of fun driving around in it. The EcoBoost starts at a price of $32,295 CAD ($27,470 USD) and the 5.0L Premium Fastback which I had for review starts at $56,745 CAD ($48,565 USD). The 2022 Ford Mustang GT is still a practical car for daily commuters but also a great car for the weekend spent at a track or on an empty mountain road. The Mustang has comfortable seats, provides a smooth ride, and looks great both inside and outside.
