Mazda Mexico may be in a bit of hot water as they just leaked news (that was supposed to be officially released on July 8th, 2020) of a new turbo Mazda 3 hatchback. Just don’t call it a Mazdaspeed 3.
The new turbocharged Mazda 3 hatchback – Sport as it’s known in Canada – will have the same turbocharged engine that is currently found in the Mazda 6, CX-5, & CX-9. It produces 227 hp & 310 lb-ft of torque on 87 octane fuel and 250 hp & 310 lb-ft of torque on 91 octane fuel. Leaked dealership order guides reveal that this new engine will be only available with a 6-speed automatic transmission and All-Wheel-Drive.
Unfortunately this will not be a new Mazdaspeed variant as Mazda has said in the past that they are focusing on developing their brand image as a more premium auto manufacturer. That’s not to say that the Mazdaspeed moniker is dead for good as other premium brands offer hot versions of their hatchbacks. The Mercedes-Benz A35 AMG pops into mind.
More information on the turbo Mazda 3 such as pricing & availability should be made available with the official reveal on July 8, 2020. However, it’s fairly safe to assume that this new engine will ask for a $2,000 CAD premium over the standard 2.5L engine as is the case with the Mazda CX-5 & Mazda 6.
