News: This Is It, The 2021 Ford Mustang Mach-E

by: Mike Ginsca,

I know. It’s not exactly the Mustang you expected, right? The Ford Mustang Mach-E has almost nothing to do with the 2-door Mustang sports car apart from the name, badge, and taillights. The Mach-E is actually the blue oval’s first full electric vehicle.

With a more crossover shape rather than a coupe-like profile of the real Mustang, the Mach-E is the first of many electric vehicles that Ford will be introducing over the coming years. Starting from the front, the Ford Mach-E has a covered grille with the Mustang badge for improved aerodynamics but with a real grille further down to provide cooling for the motors and batteries. Along the side, the shape is similar to all other crossovers to provide space for the occupants and for further aerodynamic efficiencies. And finally in the back, the Mach-E features Mustang-like taillights with a hatch opening trunk and of course no exhaust pipes.

On the inside there is a Tesla-like touchscreen that is orientated vertically rather than the upcoming Tesla Model Y’s horizontal orientation. The Model Y will be the Mach-E’s main competitor as other EVs like the Jaguar I-Pace and Mercedes-Benz EQ cost significantly more.

The base model should start in price at just under $44,000 USD (before Government incentives) and for that you get up to 210 miles (350 km) of range, 255 hp & 306 lb-ft of torque, rear or all-wheel-drive, and a 0-60 mph (96 km/h) time of mid 5 seconds. Step up to the Premium trim and you get 333 hp & 429 lb-ft of torque, up to 300 miles (480 km) of range, and again rear or all-wheel-drive options for around $50,500 USD. There will also be a California Route 1 trim with 282 hp & 306 lb-ft of torque and up to 300 miles (480 km) of range while the top GT trim will have an estimated 235 miles (380 km) of range and it will be able to do the 0-60 mpg (96 km/h) sprint in the mid 3 seconds range.

Recharge time is said to be around 47 miles (75 km) in 10 minutes from a 150-kw fast charging station. So for a full charge from flat, it should take around an hour.

Expect more details on the Ford Mustang Mach-E closer to its launch date in 2020.
