Just recently unveiled at the Tokyo Auto Salon, the 2020 Toyota GR Yaris is a wild, street-legal, rally-inspired car with 268 hp.
The Yaris GR was built from scratch on Toyota’s new TNGA platform and with know-how from Toyota’s efforts in the World Rally Championship (WRC). The chassis features reinforcements to stiffen the overall rigidity but they’ve tried to save weight by using aluminum for the hood, trunk, and door panels with carbon fiber for the roof. In all the Toyota GR Yaris weighs in at just 1,280 kg.
Getting the car moving is the job of the 268 hp and 273 ;b-ft of torque 1.6L inline 3-cylinder turbocharged engine. Toyota claims it has the world’s highest output for a 3-cylinder engine. Power is sent to a 6-speed manual transmission and onward to a 4WD system which Toyota calls “GR-FOUR”. This system has a Torsen limited slip differential at both the front and rear along with an electronically controlled multi-plate center clutch. Power can be distributed from 60:40 front to a more rear-biased 30:70 depending on the drive mode.
Now for the bad news. It’s unlikely that the 2020 Toyota Yaris GR will come to North America. But one can only hope that maybe if there’s enough demand, Toyota might consider bringing it to the North American market. If that does happen, Toyota says the First Edition GR Yaris will cost 3.96 million Yen ($47,200 CAD) and the High Performance First Edition will fetch 4.56 million Yen ($54,350 CAD).
