In a recent end of the year YouTube video, Mercedes-AMG thanked all of the people that make Mercedes-AMG vehicles. Majority of the video includes clips of current AMG street and race models including the G63 AMG, AMG GT race cars and the upcoming AMG Project One. But at the very end of the video, there is a short clip of an AMG GT 4-door Coupe that accelerates off the line with nothing but the whine of electric motors.
Earlier this year, Mercedes-Benz said that an electric AMG was in the works and that all future AMG models will eventually have hybridization. The prototype car showed in the clip is most likely that of the upcoming Mercedes-AMG GT 73 EQ Power+ 4-door Coupe. There are only rumors at this point as to what powertrain the GT 73 AMG will have but it will most likely still utilize a 4.0L twin-turbocharged V8 with electric motors to assist. It will most likely not be the same mild hybrid system that is found in current AMG vehicles like the E53 AMG Coupe, but rather a new and more powerful system. Rumors state that the GT 73 could have 800+ hp. By comparison the current Mercedes-AMG GT 63S 4-door Coupe produces “only” 630 hp.
The upcoming AMG GT 73 Hybrid will be a direct competitor to the Porsche Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid and expect the GT 73 to cost well north of $200,000 CAD.
