News: C8 Corvette Wins Motortrend’s 2020 Car Of The Year

by: Mike Ginsca,

When the 2020 Toyota Supra was announced, everyone thought that it would be the next halo car that everyone would be clawing to get their hands on. But while it did have a cult-like following and it generated buzz for Toyota, it was quickly overshadowed by the reveal of the 2020 Chevrolet Corvette C8 Stingray.

The 2020 Chevy Corvette is a drastic change for the sports car. Since its inception back in the 50’s, it has been a front-engine rear-wheel-drive car. This new one was built on a blank sheet of paper with a change from a front-engined car to a mid-engined car. The change is very controversial for the die-hard fans of the Corvette but because Chevrolet wanted to remain competitive, the change to a mid-engine layout had to be made. This means better weight distribution which results in better acceleration, braking, and handling.

The new car is so good, that the “base” C8 Corvette with the Z51 Performance package can accelerate from 0-62 mph (0-100 km/h) in 2.9 seconds. That is the exact same time as the current generation Z06 Corvette which has 650 hp versus the new Stingray’s 495 hp. Of course a new Z06 and ZR1 trim will eventually come for the C8 Corvette but the current car is already breathing down the necks of supercar manufacturers such as McLaren, Lamborghini, and Ferrari. Best of all, the 2020 Corvette Stingray starts at $60,000 USD. Not at all a supercar price for supercar performance.

Motortrend decided to present the 2020 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray with the Car of the Year award not only because of its performance on a track, but also on normal roads. “The first thing you notice when driving in town is the lack of road noise for a supercar,” said Chris Theodore, a perennial COTY guest judge. “It’s not silent, but it’s much better than any other supercar I’ve driven.” Corvettes of the past had horrible feeling and looking interiors made out of the cheapest plastics GM could lay their hands on. This one is different with soft leather and styling that one expects from a 6-figure supercar rather than a $60,000 USD Corvette.

As Motortrend’s Jonny Lieberman puts it, “Few cars change the automotive landscape, forcing other manufacturers to react, as the status quo will no longer do. It’s déjà vu all over again, again, folks. Chevy is selling a supercar for sports car prices.”
