At a Glance: 2024 Volvo XC60 Recharge Ultimate Black Edition

The 2024 Volvo XC60 Recharge Plug-In hybrid is near to perfection when it comes to comfort, looks, and driving experience. It is a great sized SUV, as it is not too large but also not too small. It also feels and looks very premium like and best of all, drives great on windy roads.

Engine/Transmission

The XC60 Recharge has a 2.0L 4-cylinder turbocharged with e-boost engine that produces a combined 455hp and 523lb-ft of torque. The XC60 is equipped with two electric motors which is great as AWD is a standard feature. I would say Volvo does a great job at combining comfort with excitement all in one. It has a rated electric range of 58km and fuel economy of 8.5L/100km both in a city and hwy. I averaged 7.3L/100km and that is with more enthusiastic driving. I think you can really get great fuel economy if you really tried hard enough. The great thing about plug-in hybrids and the XC60, is that it has a decent range of electricity meaning that if your commute is within 58km, you just may never need to fuel up; just need to charge and back at it again.

Handling/Performance

I used to think Volvo’s were not meant to be fun, but I sure was wrong once I started to test drive some of the models. Acceleration is awesome in this XC60 Recharge Ultimate whether it be on hybrid or just engine. It drives great around corners and provides a smooth ride while cruising due to the active air suspension; it absorbs the bumps for less stiffness and distributes weight evenly so it doesn’t feel like you will roll over while turning on a corner quick.

Comfort

The driver seat is comfortable as I had no issues with sitting for longer than usual time. My commute to work can be a bit long and I had no issues at the end of each trip. Long road trips would not be an issue in the XC60. The seats have lumbar support and thigh extenders for those with longer legs. The seats are great and adjustable to suit a tall or short individual. Both the driver and passenger seats have heated and cooling functions and all are covered in Nappa leather. Space in the back seats is decently spacious for average sized adults. Although taller adults would still be able to fit but of course not as comfortable when it comes to leg space.

Interior

The XC60 Recharge Ultimate is equipped with a 9inch touchscreen. Just like many of you, I’m also not the biggest fan of all controls now being controlled through the touchscreen. I must admit though that I do not mind it in Volvos. The interior is well put together and it looks great without all the cluster of buttons and knobs. I am obsessed with the crystal gear shifter as it just adds to the cabin’s awesome look. Overall, it has a great interior that will not disappoint.

Exterior

I had the opportunity to drive the Black Edition which means the badges, wheels, exterior and some cabin details are black. Black being my favourite colour, just made the XC60 look extra fine in my eyes. It is equipped with 21inch wheels but depending on the trim level it can be equipped with wheel sizes between 18 to 21inches.

Pros/Cons

Although there are a couple of small SUVs out there that may be better in some area’s vs the XC60 recharge, I do think that the 2024 Volvo XC60 Recharge holds a spot within its competitors. It has a great range for those that commute daily within the rated range, it is comfortable to drive, it is great on gas should you have longer commutes, it is decently spacious for a small family, and its luxurious. It is a fun small SUV equipped with quite a few safety features as standard. The XC60 as equipped has a price tag of $83, 950 CAD ($72,375USD).
