At a Glance: 2024 Hyundai Ioniq 5

The 2024 Hyundai Ioniq 5 is a small crossover electric SUV that is stylish, comfortable, practical, and best of all, it is compatible with high powered DC fast charging with its 800 V capabilities. Is this Ioniq 5 worthy of choosing over a Telsa Model Y?

Engine/Transmission

If you opt for the rear-wheel-drive single motor, it is equipped with a 58-kWh battery which is standard and if you choose the dual-motor AWD powertrain, then it is equipped with a 77.4-kWh battery and 168kW electric motor. The Model Y is also available with two battery sizes of 57.5kWh and 75kWh. The Ioniq 5 base model has a range of about 418km (260 miles) and about 488km (303 miles) for the top trims. When comparing to the model Y for example, the base model has a range of 394km and is available as rear wheel drive. The long range has a range of 497km (330mph) and the performance trim at 459 km. While it is not a big difference, the Ioniq 5 has a bit better range when comparing both base models. The Ioniq 5 produces 320hp and 460lb-ft of torque for the dual motor and 225hp and 258lb-ft of torque for the single motor.

Handling/Performance

0 – 100k/h (60mph) is said to be reached in about 7 seconds for the Ioniq 5 so its not super quick but as an electric vehicle, it feels quicker than it really is. One thing I didn’t like at all was the I-pedal as it is not the smoothest. I found myself having to try hard to stop smoothly which is no fun when out and about driving. From a stop, lifting your foot off the brake pedal you will notice it jerks a bit. It wont spill your drink type of jerk but it is noticeable. While on comfort mode, it is smooth to drive, steering is precise as I felt it responded well to my inputs. If you switch to the sport mode, you will instantly feel the difference and feel that extra torque. I do however feel that the Model Y is more exciting to drive. I enjoy that stick back to your seat feeling when starting from stop. I also enjoy the one pedal mode as it is very responsive and doesn’t take much effort to get the vehicle to stop or slow down.

Comfort

When it comes to comfort, I found the front and rear seats to be very comfortable. Very spacious and fits 4 adults comfortably. The front driver’s seat has 8-power adjustments and a 2–way power lumbar support. It is also great for cargo space. I was able to fit 2 weeks worth of groceries for a big family solely in the back and no issues with running out of space. I also liked that the Ioniq 5 does not sit low, so it isn’t hard on your back trying to put stuff in the trunk. Leg room and head space is also great at least for average sized individuals.

Interior

The interior of the of the 2024 Hyundai Ioniq 5 is more exciting to look at than that of the Model Y. The materials used throughout the cabin feel a bit nicer to the touch except the leather seats. That I will give a point to the Model Y for comfortable seats and nice material. It is equipped with a 12.3-inch infotainment system which is very straightforward to use so you will not have issues there. You also get wireless phone charging, Bose sound system, a couple USB charging ports, head up display, and battery preconditioning system to name a few.

Exterior

As I mentioned previously, the Ioniq 5 is quite stylish. I very rarely find EV vehicles attractive, but I did like the look of the Ioniq 5. One thing I really liked about the Ioniq 5 are the door handles, I’m glad they are not as awkward as the ones on a Tesla when you try and open the doors from the outside. It is equipped with 19-inch alloy wheels, keyless entry, LED headlights, heated side mirrors. Great looking overall.

Pros/Cons

As we all know EV’s are expensive at the moment, and the Ioniq 5 is no exception. It is a great sized EV SUV at a somewhat affordable price, at least for those in the market for an EV. It is great that it charges quick with a fast charger, but the problem rises when there aren’t enough super chargers for EV’s in the area. This is when Tesla takes over; there are plenty more charging stations for Tesla’s which make it easier to own a vehicle. When comparing ranges, it isn’t a big difference between a model Y and the Ioniq 5, both have decent range, drive great, and are comfortable. The Ioniq 5 is perfect for someone that does not care so much about brands and is wanting a great affordable EV SUV. It’s different from the rest whereas the Model Y is great for many reasons as well but the biggest deal breaker for me is that it is not interesting to look at from the inside, and it does not feel premium like on the inside. It is great however to drive, and most importantly that there are charging stations pretty much all-around major cities. The Ioniq 5 has a starting price of $54,999 CAD ($41,650 USD) and the AWD long range at $56,999 CAD ($49,200 USD). The starting price of the Tesla model Y is $57,990 CAD ($54,990 USD) with the top trim at $74,290 CAD. ($58,990 USD) In Canada we get provincial and federal government EV incentives so something to check out accordingly.
