Review: 2023 Genesis G80 Electrified

Genesis has really upped its game when it comes to the design of its vehicles. It really is trying to get close to looking just as good as a Mercedes sedan for example. The 2023 Genesis G80 Electrified is an elegant luxurious sedan. Now, is this G80 electric worth looking into?

Engine/Transmission

The Genesis G80 has a dual motor layout with 136 kW front and rear which makes it an AWD. It produces 365hp and 516lb-ft of torque. It is equipped with an 87.2 kWh battery and has about 454 km (282 miles) of electric range. The G80 reaches 0-96km/hr (60 mph) in just about 4 seconds! I averaged 20.6 kWh/100km with mostly city driving. The G80 however is rated for 19.1 kWh/100km.

Handling/Performance

Driving the 2023 Genesis G80 electrified is smooth and comfortable. It is quiet inside the cabin and of course being an all-electric vehicle makes it even quieter. The G80 does not drive or feel like a sports car, it is a sedan meant for comfort. This doesn’t mean its boring to drive in the G80 though, as I still enjoyed my time driving in and out of the city. It is great to maneuver as well even though it is on the larger side. Steering is a bit light which makes it easier to handle around town. Launching from a stop with the G80 is not an issue at all. It picks up speed quickly and overtaking a vehicle will not be an issue. Although it picks up speed quick, its not a car you want to be driving at higher speeds on winding roads. You will find it is the most relaxed driving experience on a highway.

Comfort

The front seats of the G80 Electric are very comfortable and has enough adjustments to choose from to fit your seating position needs. The seats are just about right in terms of softness; not too soft and not too firm. The back seats were also just as comfortable, the only issue I found was that my thighs didn’t feel supported. It felt like my knees were a bit higher than my hips which was not comfortable and not a place I would want to sit for long. This could have been due to my height so I would say anyone under 5’7″ wouldn’t have this issue. It may also be that the G80 sits a bit lower or at least it felt that way to me. Now this isn’t to say that it is as bad as sitting on the third row of an SUV, but I did notice a bit of difference. Leg space however was not an issue, it is a spacious sedan. My legs did not touch the driver’s seat even with the driver seat pushed back. Although the G80 is a 5 passenger it fits 4 comfortably.

Interior

The G80 Electric is a great looking sedan, it looks and feels very premium. It is equipped with a 14.5-inch touchscreen that is simple to use. The G80 has a mix of buttons, knobs and of course the touchscreen. Although the interior is great, I do think that it would have been better if it had a sunroof. For the price that it is worth, it needed a sunroof. The G80 electric is available as the prestige trim only and is equipped with leather upholstery and luxurious wooden trim. The backseats have their own separate climate control and are also heated. Trunk space is limited due to the battery placement which also limits passenger space and unfortunately there is no frunk space available. To add to the luxurious feel, the G80 is equipped with soft closing doors.

Exterior

I really like how the G80 electric looks with the front grille. One nice thing about it is that the charging port is hidden inside the front grille. Who would have thought! At least not me. It is an easy access and definitely a different look compared to the usual side inlets of other EV vehicles. The G80 electric is equipped with LED headlights and taillights which also add to the nice look of it and also equipped with 19-inch alloy wheels.

Pros/Cons

Overall, it is a great sedan. With a starting price of $105,000 CAD ($79,825 USD), it is loaded with quite a few features as standard that would normally be extra and add up to your starting price when compared to other brands making it well over the starting price of the G80 electric. For all that it is available with, I would say it is worth considering the G80 electric if you are looking for a luxurious EV sedan. The G80 has a decent electric driving range, it has a beautiful interior, not quite as pretty as Mercedes in my eyes but still great looking. It is quick due to its instant torque. The downside of the G80 electric was the limited trunk and passenger space, no frunk space whatsoever, and no sunroof. If you can get past these, then I think this is a great option if you are in the market looking for a luxurious sedan with great features.
