The 2025 EX-40 Ultra twin motor is the exact same as the XC-40 Recharge just with a different name, so it is still a great looking compact SUV. It is stylish and practical with its small size which makes it very easy to maneuver around city streets. This is a great compact SUV for those wanting a quick but light handling vehicle.
Engine/Transmission
The 2025 Volvo EX40 is equipped with twin-electric motors as an AWD crossover SUV. The motors produce 402hp and 494 lb-ft of torque from an 82kWh battery. The EX40 can reach 0-96 km/h (60 mph) in under 5 seconds. Like most EV vehicles, the launch is quick, and you can easily go above the speed limit in no time. It has an electric range of about 418 km (260 miles) which is not that much compared to its competitors. It is however just as quick to some of its competitors. It is rated for 2.2 kWh/100km in a city and 2.8 kWh/100km on a hwy.
Handling/Performance
The Volvo EX40 is perfect for city driving due to its size as it is easy to maneuver in and out of parking lots and on narrow roads. Although it is not a large SUV it does not sit low so it feels as if you were driving a bigger vehicle than what it is because of the height. Driving the EX-40 is a lot of fun, and if you are like me, you will find yourself accelerating hard after every stop just because its quick and why wouldn’t you not do it? Doing so of course drains the battery more than you’d like or want. It has a bit of a sporty feel when driving which is what makes it all that more fun to drive. The EX40 can charge up to 80% in under half an hr using a 200 kW charger and about an hr using a 50 Kw charger. Home outlets will of course take a day or two to fully charge. The battery efficiency could be better, but it may or may not affect you depending on your driving style and how far you commute. During my time with the EX40, I averaged 21.6 kWh/100km so slightly better than when I drove the XC-40 Recharge in early 2023.
Comfort
Front seats in the EX40 are comfortable enough for daily commutes and trips with the adjustments to suit your seating position. The backseats are spacious enough for average height people. They can be a bit on the firm side, so you don’t want to go long periods without standing up and stretching. I was able to sit comfortably in the backseat with the driver’s seat pushed back, with no issues. My knees did not touch the front seat and I did not feel squished. While driving over uneven pavement you will feel the bumps more so because of its firm drive. It is not as smooth as you’d want but it is still a decent ride.
Interior
Although the Volvo EX40 does not look like a big SUV, it sure doesn’t feel as tiny as it may look. It is equipped with a 2-zone climate control, air purifier, heated front and back seats, interior ambient lighting, suede and leather seats to name a few cool features. It is equipped with a 12.3-inch driver display and a 9-inch touchscreen that is simple to use. Volvo is known for its glitchy system but luckily, I had no issues during my time with the EX40. The interior feels and looks great. The EX40 has storage space in the frunk for small items and of course the trunk has decent amount of cargo space. So again, nothing has changed compared to the XC40 Recharge which isn’t a bad thing because the XC40 was already great to begin with.
Exterior
The EX40 is equipped with 20-inch alloy wheels. While I wasn’t a big fan of its looks back in 2023, it grew on me, and I think it’s a great compact SUV both inside and out.
Pros and Cons
If you are looking for a small SUV that is fast, then the 2025 Volvo EX40 is one you can consider. It is comfortable and spacious enough even though it is a crossover SUV. I managed to fit quite a few large bags in the back seats with no issues and didn’t even need to use the trunk space. My point being is that although it may look small, it really isn’t. If you enjoy driving engaging vehicles, then you are in luck with the EX40. It is fast! Not supercar fast but fast, and as I mentioned earlier, you get addicted to accelerating quickly. Electric driving range is less compared to its competitors but again all depends on how you intend to use the SUV. If you are someone that does not go out on long road trips or random long drives, then the EX40 can be an option. The as equipped price for the 2025 Volvo EX40 is $76,515 CAD ($61,845 USD) so it may be bit high but it is a Volvo and an all electric vehicle after all.
