The 2025 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV is one that should be at the top of the list when considering a PHEV SUV. It is also a 3-row SUV, granted it does not have all that much space in that row, but its pros beat the lack of space.
Engine/Transmission
It is equipped with a 2.4L 4-cylinder engine that produces a combined 248 hp and 332 lb-ft of torque. It is rated for 9.2 L/100km in a city and 8.7 L100km on a highway while I averaged a combined 5.1 L/100km, so you can certainly get better fuel economy than what it is rated for. But that all depends on how often you plug it in and recharge the battery. Also, when fully charging the battery, the car was estimating a range of 85 km. This of course varies but I was able to get closer to 73 km worth of electric only range. If you drive consciously about saving the battery life, you can get the most out of the driving range which is exactly what I did. Unfortunately, after the battery depletes, gas consumption is not the greatest. It feels like it uses up more than needed so it is best to use the electric mode. Although it is rated for 61km of driving range, I still think it is great for daily commutes without needing to use gasoline.
Handling/Performance
Although it is a Mitsubishi, it isn’t exactly an enthusiastic SUV to drive. It’s meant for day-to-day driving. However, because of its electric motor, it is quicker to pick up speed from a stop but that’s as interesting as it will get. You will not get a feel of sporty driving with the Outlander PHEV. It has a comfortable and quiet ride thanks to its tuned suspension. While accelerating from a stop, the engine noise is quiet but as soon as you put your foot down it will become noisy. It all depends on how hard you accelerate.
Comfort
The 2025 Outlander PHEV is a 3-row SUV, but it is not ideal to sit in the 3rd row. It is quite squishy, and I think only to be used when you have a fully packed SUV. It may be ok for children but not for long rides as it is not spacious at all. The 2nd row however has plenty of space for legroom and headroom for adults and of course children. The driver and front passenger also get great space. For both the 1st and 2nd row, passengers get wider seats which means more hip room. Cargo space is also roomier for extra items.
Interior
It is a nice cabin to look at and touch as it has soft to the touch materials; the door panels and arm rest have soft cushioned leather. Although there is some shiny plastic on the centre console, it is a great interior. It has a very modern look and overall, very well put together. It is equipped with a 9-inch infotainment system which I was not a huge fan of. To me it felt a bit crowed with all the gadgets showing on one page, whereas I think dividing into two pages or making the screen slightly bigger would make a difference.
Exterior
The exterior of the 2025 Outlander PHEV is just as great as the interior. It is modern looking, and its great looks compensate for its lack of excitement while driving. Its well sculpted body is quite eye catching as I do find myself turning my head to check it out when I see it. If you choose the Noir trim here in Canada, that is equipped with special black exterior and interior features, semi aniline leather seats, front seat massage function which is rare in a not so luxury SUV. It is also equipped with 20-inch black alloy wheels, gloss black skid plate styling, black interior stitching. The list goes on but the point is, the Noir edition is awesome.
Pros/Cons
There are certainly some good and bad when it comes to the 2025 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV. Let’s start off with the not so great, which is that it lacks excitement when driving, the fuel economy is not great once the battery has depleted, 3rd row space is almost nonexistent but then again when have we heard of a super spacious 3rd row SUV. Some can be a bit more spacious than others but not a whole lot. Now on to the good side of the Outlander PHEV. To start off, you don’t see that many 3-row PHEV SUVs in the market today. It is also very comfortable and spacious for the 1st and 2nd row which is important as they are the most used. It is also well equipped and at an affordable price when compared to its competitors. The Hybrid component and powertrain warranty is also very generous at a 10-year warranty. Enticing I must say. The starting price of the Outlander PHEV is $48,698 CAD ($41,480 USD).
