I am quite impressed with the 2024 Hyundai Santa Fe because of how it drives, how comfortable and spacious it is, and just a big difference in terms of looks when compared to the previous generations.
Engine/Transmission
The Santa Fe that I had on demo had a 2.5L Turbo 4-cylinder engine that produced 277hp and 311lb-ft of torque. It is rated for 12.1 L/100km on a hwy and 8.8 L/100km in a city while I averaged 11.2 L//100km combined. The Santa Fe comes standard with AWD and paired with an 8-speed dual clutch automatic transmission. You also have an option for a hybrid with a 1.6L Turbo 4-cylinder.
Handling/Performance
Although it does not drive as enthusiastically as say the Mazda CX-70 for example, it is still enjoyable. It picks up speed quite quickly for its big size with no issues and overtaking a vehicle is not a problem once on the go. It is also on the quiet side so the only time you may hear the turbo kick in is when you accelerate harder than normal, and it will also feel like it lags a bit so its not going to feel like a sports SUV. On normal speeds, however, you won’t hear that much engine noise. Cruising around the city is great as it is a smooth ride as the transmission shifts gears smoothly. Driving through corners feels steady but again, not a SUV you would take corners faster than normal.
Comfort
The most obvious change in the Santa Fe is its boxy look and height. It is made to be quite spacious with a third row. The third-row seats are not as comfortable and not as much space as its competitors, but kids shouldn’t have a big problem sitting there. With the third-row seats folded; you get extra cargo space. The second-row seats are spacious enough for even taller than average adults so again kids should not have an issue at all. In the front and passenger seats, they are spacious with enough headroom and legroom. I had no issues with back pain or my butt getting numb while sitting for long periods of time. A long drive will not be as tiresome, and it is padded enough. For the second-row seats, you have the option of adjusting the seat back angle for more comfort. With the increased height it also makes getting in and out of the Santa Fe easier especially for taller individuals. Getting groceries in and out of the back is no problem and doesn’t feel hard on your back as you don’t have to duck down. Although tire noise and road noise aren’t intrusive, I did notice one thing while driving alone and in complete silence. At a distance I could hear that sound when you are driving on a highway, and you roll your back windows and it’s a loud wind noise. Although it wasn’t as loud as that, I could still hear it from a distance, and I always had to make sure I had all my windows rolled up.
Interior
The interior of the Santa Fe is great, I like how spacious it is and just feels great with the materials used throughout the cabin. It is equipped with a 12.3-inch touchscreen which is straightforward to use and is available with wireless Apple CarPlay / Android Auto. I really like the centre console with the storage space underneath to put a small bag or any small items that you would not want to have out in the open. As mentioned earlier, there is plenty of space in the Santa Fe whether it be space for passengers or space for belongings. If in need of passenger space, you have the option of the third row and if cargo space is needed, you can fold the third row and have about 1,148L of space, 2,267L with the second row folded.
Exterior
I’m obsessed with the boxy look; its giving posh vibes and I’m sold with just its looks and I’m sure a few others would feel the same way I do. With the previous generation, I would have never even considered turning my head for a Santa Fe, but this new generation has changed my mind. It is available with 18 to 21-inch wheels depending on the trim you opt for which adds to that big bulky look. The great thing about it is that even though it looks bulky it doesn’t feel that bulky to drive.
Pros/Cons
There really isn’t anything I completely disliked from the Santa Fe. It was great to drive as it is easy to maneuver and is comfortable. It has enough space for a family, it is great looking both inside and outside, and it just ticks quite a few boxes that I would be looking into if I was looking for a family SUV. One thing that could be better is the fuel economy but that’s where the hybrid comes in which I will be reviewing soon. The starting price of the Hyundai Santa Fe is $40,999 CAD ($48,999 USD).
