The 2024 Acura MDX Platinum Elite is a hot pick because it drives like a sports SUV, it looks like one, and although its big, it doesn’t feel like it is while behind the wheel. The 2024 model has no updates from its 2023 model year but that’s ok because its still great just as it is. The MDX is a 3-row SUV, so plenty of space with a great looking interior. Although when compared to its competitors like the Genesis GV80 for example, it does not compare to the luxury side. However, if you prefer a more affordable 3-row SUV that drives enthusiastically and has quite a lot of safety standard features for a lower price than its competitors, then the MDX Platinum Elite, or any trim level for that matter, is a great option.
Engine/Transmission
The 2024 Acura MDX Platinum Elite has a 3.5L V6 engine paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters, and it produces 290hp and 267lb-ft of torque. It is rated for 12.6L/100km city driving and 9.4L/100km in a hwy, meanwhile, I averaged a combined 13.4L/100km but I am sure I could have had better numbers, but I did enjoy driving enthusiastically. In the Canadian and US market, you get two options for the engine, one with a 3.0L Turbocharged V6 producing 355hp if you choose the Type-S and the rest of the trims are available with this 3.5L V6.
Handling/Performance
Available as standard, the MDX Elite is equipped with Super Handling AWD which you will notice the difference that it maintains stability during spirited cornering. Although I did not get to fully test it to its potential, I did notice that it did not feel like I was about to roll over while driving on a semi windy road. During normal driving, you will notice it is a bit of a bouncy ride which is not a bad thing. It is great as you won’t feel yourself digging into the uneven pavement or potholes because of its multi-link rear suspension providing extra comfort. If you are someone that likes to speed up and then brake suddenly, note that to stop the MDX you will need a greater stopping distance than say a sedan for obvious reasons. Overall, it drives great and if you’re looking for a sportier drive then the Type-S would be the one to go for.
Comfort
The MDX has plenty of space starting from the drivers seat all the way to the 3rd row! At 5ft10, I fit fine in the 3rd row. I won’t say it’s comfortable, but I also did not feel squished. I could sit there without issues for a while so clearly kids won’t have any issues. 2nd row also had no issues, and even with the driver seat pushed all the way back, I had no problem with leg space. As the driver, I had plenty of legroom and headspace and had great visibility all around. Cargo space is great as well with 513L with all seats up and 2,690L with rear seats down. Road noise is not intrusive in the cabin so you can have a comfortable conversation with passengers.
Interior
Now I know some will hate that the infotainment screen is not touch. I was a bit disappointed too, but I must admit I did not mind the touchpad to navigate through the infotainment during my week with the MDX. I also thought the wrist pad was a nice touch to it so that you can rest your wrist while using the touchpad. The infotainment screen is a 12.3-inch display and has Alexa built in which is neat. Other than it not being a touch screen, its straightforward to use. The open pore wood, soft leather seats and other materials used throughout the cabin along with interesting features help make the MDX feel a bit luxurious. One very cool feature is the CabinTalk in car PA system, this helps to communicate with the rear passengers through the rear speakers. It is also equipped with USB charge ports throughout the rows.
Exterior
The 2024 Acura MDX Platinum is equipped with 20-inch alloy wheels, it is also equipped with front wiper deicer, heated power adjusting folding side mirrors, rear camera washer, panoramic moonroof, and jewel LED headlights which give the MDX a fine look. These are a few of the standard features that would catch most people’s attention. Normally, these would be add-ons and not standard features in other competitors.
Pros/Cons
Although I truly found the 2024 Acura MDX Platinum Elite to be comfortable and great to drive, its one of those type of SUVs that doesn’t t look expensive, but it has quite a price tag. It’s not subtle either, because that would be the Genesis GV80. The GV80 looks expensive but not in a flashy way whereas the MDX does not look like either. Its an SUV that you need to drive to know its worth because it has a lot of standard and safety features, and the interior also looks a bit on the luxury side. I feel it could be the brand that makes me think it wouldn’t be as expensive. The starting price of the base MDX is $65,900 CAD ($53,845 USD) and for the Platinum Elite it is $72,900 CAD ($62,045 USD) I think if I were looking for a SUV, I would choose the base GV80 which roughly has the same starting price as the Elite. It looks more luxurious, prettier interior and exterior, and drives a bit better in my opinion. But that is just my preference, I still think the MDX is a great choice if you choose to purchase one.
