Not to be outdone by other supercar manufacturers, Lotus has joined the electric supercar / hypercar race. The almost 2,000 hp Lotus Evija was unveiled earlier this year and has now moved on to prototype testing.
The Evija is made almost entirely of a carbon fiber body but electric components, such as the batteries and motors, are not light. The hypercar tips the scales at just over 3,700 lbs (1,678 kg) which is not bad but for a hypercar, it is a heavyweight. The power comes from four independent electric motors with a total combined output of 1,973 hp and 1,254 lb-ft of torque. The 0-60 mph (0-96 km/h) sprint gets done in less than 3 seconds, 0-186 mph (0-300 km/h) in less than 9 seconds, and a top speed north of 200 mph.
Lotus executives are aiming to topple the Lamborghini Aventador SVJ’s Nurburgring production car record of 6 minutes and 44.97 seconds. A tall order especially for an electric hypercar as battery range may be an issue when driving at full speed for over 6 minutes. Lotus claims a range of 225 miles (360 km) under ideal conditions and a recharge from 0-80% in approximately 10 minutes from a 350 kW DC fast charger… if one even exists.
As mentioned, this yellow camouflage Lotus Evija is the first dynamic prototype of the new car. Director of vehicle attributes at Lotus, Gavan Kershaw said “Our aim is to make sure it’s a true Lotus in every sense, with exceptional performance that’s going to set new standards in the hypercar sector.”
Production of the 2021 Lotus Evija is set to begin next year and just 130 units will be made worldwide.
