The horsepower wars between the big 3 German brands (BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Audi) were in full swing a few years ago with their “super” sedans that have 600+hp. Now, the horsepower wars are spilling into the SUV segment with the unveiling of the 2021 Mercedes-Benz GLC63 AMG and 2021 Mercedes-Benz GLS63 AMG SUVs.
Both of these family haulers use a 4.0L twin-turbocharged V8 with the EQ Boost starter/generator mild-hybrid system that is already available on other AMG models such as the E53 AMG Coupe. In the GLE63 and GLS63, power is a very healthy 603 hp and 627 lb-ft of torque. The EQ Boost provides 21 hp and 184 lb-ft of torque throughout the rpm range whenever the ECU deems necessary and to fill the gaps between gear shifts. Speaking of gears, both SUVs will be offered with only a 9-speed automatic transmission and AWD.
Both the GLE 63 AMG and GLS 63 AMG come equipped with adaptive air suspension as well as active dampers and roll stabilizers. Mercedes-Benz say that the heavy SUVs stay virtually flat through corners.
The interiors of both SUVs are virtually identical with both featuring the new MBUX infotainment system and dual 10.25″ driver and center displays. While the cars in Mercedes’ lineup feature circular air vents, the SUVs have rectangular air vents to set them apart. Expect interior gadgets and features to be similar to those of their car counterparts; heated and ventilated seats, heated steering wheel, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, premium audio, navigation, etc.
As per usual, Mercedes-Benz did not specify pricing but both the 2021 Mercedes-Benz GLC63 AMG and 2021 Mercedes-Benz GLS63 AMG will be hitting dealerships next year.
