News: BMW i4 Confirmed For 2021

by: Mike Ginsca,

BMW has been late to the electric game. We all thought that they would lead the way with the i3 and i8 back in 2013 and 2014 respectively, but no new electric vehicles or significant updates to those vehicles have come since. Now though, BMW confirms that the i4 sedan will be hitting dealerships in 2021.

The BMW i4 will be a direct competitor to the Tesla Model 3 with similar features and performance. It will be available with an 80 kWh lithium-ion battery pack with a range of more than 300 miles (470 km). Power will be around the 530 hp mark with a 0-62 mph (0-100 km/h) sprint in under 4 seconds and a governed top speed of 120 mph (193 km/h). Charging it back up with be available through a 150 kw fast charger with a time of 35 minutes from flat to 80%.

Unlike the BMW i3 and i8, the 2021 BMW i4 will have similar styling to the next-generation 4-series which takes a lot of inspiration from the i Vision Dynamics Concept (pictured). Also unlike its electric brothers, the platform of the new i4 will not be bespoke to the car. It will be made on BMW’s new CLAR platform which is flexible enough to accommodate internal combustion engines, hybrids, and full electric vehicles.

Expect to find out more details on the 2021 BMW i4 next year along with a full reveal most likely at the 2020 Frankfurt Motor Show.
